Nerdly News: Slinky Dog coaster arrives, Inhumans in IMAX

Rounding up some of the top geeky news items for today so you don’t have to go wandering the Internet (we know, you’re working):

VIDEO: Slinky Dog coaster cars show up at Disney World

It’s not just the new Star Wars World that has us excited to plan a trip to Disney World in the future. As part of its new Toy Story Land for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the company is building a Slinky Dog Dash Roller Coaster, which “will make guests feel like they’re shrunk to the size of a toy” from the Toy Story movies.

The Disney Blog has a video showing the new carts arriving and interviews with Disney creators about the ride.

Game of Thrones in modern times?

A mysterious video trailer popped up this week touting a new “Westeros The Series”, in which characters from Game of Thrones are suddenly thrust into a new world. The Telegraph has more details on whether this was just a fan-made video or something that might actually be produced.

Big, big, big Netflix news — and almost all of it’s good

In 2012, Netflix made a deal with Disney in which the streaming service gets all — that’s all — the latest movies from Walt Disney Animation, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar. The deal goes into effect in September, so prepare for a kick-ass fall.

Now, the only bummer news is that Hercules (our pick for most underrated Disney animated movie), Mulan, and Hunchback of Notre Dame 1 & 2 are leaving Netflix. Hercules is gone by June 1, Hunchback and Mulan on June 24. But, this probably isn’t a big deal as you may own them. Except if you’re us and don’t own Hercules, which you love and now need to purchase on Blu-ray.

But, let’s get you some more good Netflix news: There are some excellent movies coming soon.

Arriving June 1: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and Jurassic Park 3, aka, Jurassic Park and the other two cruddy ones.

Disney Parks staff Whisper what it’s really like working there

Walt Disney World

I love Disney (but not this much) and from time to time I’ve thought, Wouldn’t it be fun to retire to Orlando and work at Walt Disney World? (I know it wouldn’t be, but go with me here.)

So it was with great interest I read this Daily Mail story on Disney employees allegedly anonymously yakking to Whisper about what life is like as a Parks employee. Some tidbits:

‘I work at Disney World and being around children and their parents all day every day has taught me how not to raise my children.’
100% true.

‘When I worked at Disney I wanted so much to freak out whenever I met a celebrity. Totally sucks when I can’t break out of character.’
Believe. I would feel the same way.

‘I once walked in on Belle and Gaston having sex. They paused and then Belle says: “Don’t tell the Beast.”‘
Calling bull on this, but a super story if true. This will this employee’s go-to story (true or not) whenever he or she hears “Disney” forever more.

‘Every day before my shift I drink liquor to help make me more cheerful for the children.’
Possible and admirable — functional alcoholism for the benefit of mankind.

‘I work at Disney and ‘have a magical day’ is mouse for “go f*** yourself”.’
Not only do I completely believe this, I intend to adopt it in everyday life.

Not everything is crappy working at the Happiest Place on Earth, but you can read those charming tidbits here.

Farewell, Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity

Well, that was some surprising news today.

After three versions and a whole lot of action figures, Disney Infinity is kaput. In a blog post on the Disney Interactive website, John Blackburn (SVP & GM of Disney Infinity) announced the news.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

Here at M&DAG headquarters, we’ve spent A LOT of money on the games and figures, but for the most part we’ve enjoyed the experience. It’s allowed all of our kids to get interested in video games (not just the boy), and it fostered interest in other world-building games, such as Minecraft.
