NASA teams with Rocket and Groot

rocket groot nasa

Well, this is cool. NASA has chosen the Guardian’s terrible twosome to adorn the official mission patch for its work aboard the International Space Station this year.

At Comic-Con, a NASA official noted the pair were chosen because they “space-based background,” and represent the “characteristics associated with what’s happening on the space station.” Really, you want the jazz that happens with those two (read: everything getting blown up and destroyed) to happen on the ISS? Did they even watch the movie? Regardless, story here.

Our favorite geeky TV news from San Diego Comic-Con

OK, we’ve covered the new movie trailers from San Diego Comic-Con – let’s switch to the smaller screen. Here are a bunch of trailers for new series, new seasons and other TV-related stuff that debuted over the past few days at the geekfest known as SDCC.

Star Trek: Discovery
Something about the title bothers me – maybe it’s the fact that it reminds me of a cable channel, or a credit card. Or maybe it still bothers me that in order to see this series, you’ll have to subscribe to another Internet service. Listen, we love Star Trek, but do we love it enough to shell another $6 per month? When you consider subscriptions for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon (if you’re paying for Prime) and HBO Now, these are starting to rack up.

Maybe we’ll change our mind if we see something more than just a ship and a title (maybe some additional plot details? Some character profiles? Anything?)

1. Didn’t we already know this? 2. Apparently Stallone is in this, too. Say what? 3. Most important: What’s on the soundtrack?

Review: King’s Gold lets your kids play pirate by rolling dice

Kings Gold coins dice

Game: King’s Gold
Creator: Blue Orange
Price: $11.93 (buy here on Amazon)
Players: 2 to 6
Ages: 8 to Adult

King’s Gold is a very fast game that can end even faster if you have a lucky roll of the dice. The object of the game is to collect the most gold coins, reproduced here in the form of plastic. Players can collect gold in different ways – by grabbing it from the main game box, stealing it from the king (more on that later), or stealing it from other players (which the kids love the most).

These actions are achieved by rolling five dice, each decorated with different symbols (1, 2 or 3 coins, a skull, red crossbones or a cannon). Players get three rolls of the dice to try to achieve the final goal combination for a particular action, and you can save dice off to the side if you want. If your kids have played Yahtzee, they’ll quickly understand the process.

Should you let your kids play Pokemon Go?

Wow, we go away for a few days (vacation!) and the whole world goes crazy over a mobile app.

Yep, we’re talking about Pokemon Go, which Nintendo released for iOS and Google mobile devices over the weekend, and apparently has taken the world by storm.

We’ve seen a lot of crazes come and go, and for a mobile app to become this popular this quickly either says something about Nintendo, the Pokemon game or the fact that we’re all so connected now that news like this amplifies and spreads so much quicker. But that’s a post for another time, perhaps.

What you really want to know is, “Should I let my kids download/play this app?”

Geek streaming you can/should watch with your kids in July 2016

With school out and the kids already saying “We’re bored!”, here are some “new” movies that are streaming on Netflix in July 2016 (and one holdover from June 2016) that will not only entertain your kids, but will give them additional geek cred (and heck, you’ll enjoy them too).

Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990)
If you haven’t yet shown your kids the time-travel series starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd yet, this is a great chance, as all three movies are available starting tomorrow. There’s some 1980s-level language to watch out for (especially the S-word and some G-damns), but for the most part kids aged 8 and up should be OK to watch this (they tend to ignore the subplots of the whole Marty/Lorraine arc). Mainly they’ll laugh every time Biff lands in the manure pile.

Love Game of Thrones ? Watch Game of Jones

Leslie Jones Game of Jones

There’s nothing more hilarious than watching a funny person riff. This is backed up most recently by last night’s “Game of Jones” segment on Late Night With Seth Myers.

Myers sat down the Jones (of Saturday Night Live and next month’s Ghostbusters reboot) to watch last week’s epic “Battle of the Bastards” episode. The 8-minute clip is absolutely hysterical with, among other things, Jones opining on Tyrion, Littlefinger, the Unsullied, Daenerys, Jon Snow (“The boy got 9 lives. He’s a cat! He’s a frickin’ cat!”), Melisandre, Ramsay, Rickon (“You got to zig zag (%$#^$&!@($#. You can’t let him just shoot the arrow.”) and others.

She also gives Daenerys a theme song (pictured above), imitates Ramsay’s hounds, and breaks into Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” when Sansa shows up. And her sheer unbridled joy at Ramsay’s dog’s arrival at the end of the episode accurately reflects that of every GoT fan ay 9:58 p.m. last Sunday. Apparently Jones (@Lesdoggg) live tweets every GoT episode, and I’ll be adding her to my Follow list ASAP.

Watch us open the June 2016 Marvel Collector Corps box

Our junior staff members are back at it, unboxing the Marvel Collector Corps box that contains several Funko collectibles, a T-shirt, pins, patches and a comic book.

For the June 2016 edition, it’s “Women of Power”, featuring some of the female super-heroes we all love and adore. (Editor’s Note: We realized after we finished filming that our unboxer kept saying “Scarlet Spider”, when in fact it was Spider Gwen. Don’t send us any angry comments!)

Let’s create the menu for the Golden Girls restaurant

The big news yesterday for some people in this Golden Girls-obsessed household was the announcement of a Golden Girls-themed restaurant  in Washington Heights, New York (upper Manhattan).

The “Rue La Rue Cafe”, will open later this year (early September) to honor the late Rue McClanahan. The creator of the restaurant, Michael J. LaRue, was a close friend to the actress, who played Blanche Devereaux in the TV series. LaRue inherited much of McClanahan’s show business memorabilia after the actress’ death, and he said he plans to use some of these items to help decorate the restaurant. He also said he’s lined up actress Betty White, the only surviving major cast member from the show, to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The article mentions food items including “cheesecake, soups, wraps, salads, desserts, baked treats and wine”, with some items “tied to characters and situations on the show.” We love these ideas, but they seem to general to us. Here are our suggestions for the food items we’d like to see:

The ‘Wicked’ movie is coming in 2019: Here’s our dream cast

Wicked Movie Dream Cast

Until we get a Hamilton movie, the biggest upcoming movie based on a Broadway musical has to be Wicked. Since it debuted on Broadway in 2004, many, many people have hoped for a movie version (and since one of the producers was Universal, it was only a matter of time before they started to move on it).

According to several reports (including this one from Variety), they’ve now announced a date for the release of the movie – Dec. 20, 2019. This puts it into Christmas-movie and Acadamy Awards territory. With three-plus years to go, that’s a lot of time to make a movie that people will love, and it’s understandable that a cast hasn’t been announced yet.

One big reason for this, I think – casting this movie is going to make some people very happy, or very angry, or both.

For theater geeks, this will be bigger than Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in Batman v. Superman. It will be bigger than finding out who’s Rey’s parents are in Star Wars: Episode VIII or Episode IX.

E3 trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens shows us more Rey, Kylo and Chewie

Call us insane, but we can’t get enough of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we were very happy to see the latest E3 trailer from the makers of the upcoming LEGO Star Wars version of Episode VII.

This trailer gives us some more Rey moments (hooray!), as well as scenes with the pouty Kylo Ren (how will LEGO address his tantrums?) and a cool sequence featuring our favorite Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron.

John Williams to score Ready Player One, next Star Wars

Steven Spielberg and John WilliamsIn wonderful news for sci-fi and music fans, the iconic John Williams tells Variety he’ll be writing the music for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Ready Player One and the next Star Wars installment. Reports Variety:

He plans to begin work on Spielberg’s next film, “Ready Player One,” in November, and then next year expects to do the next “Star Wars” film. “If I can do it, I certainly will. I told Kathy Kennedy I’m happy to do it, but the real reason is, I didn’t want anybody else writing music for Daisy Ridley,” he quips.

The 84-year-old is fresh off scoring next month’s The BFG and, of course, last year’s The Force Awakens. Spielberg presented Williams with the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award last night; he was the first composer to receive the organization’s highest honor in its 44-year-history.

This LEGO Ghostbusters animation is a must-see

Apologies for yet another Ghostbusters post (gee, you’d think there was another movie coming up). With the proliferation of LEGO mini-figures based on pop-culture brands, there are a LOT of stop-motion animations that people create on YouTube that are super-fantastic.

Here’s another one – the folks at Digital Wizardz created an homage to the original Ghostbusters film with stop-motion figures (not the CGI stuff that the regular LEGO teams do). The coolest part is the final battle, in which our heroes get help from a lot of different sources (it’s like they were playing LEGO Dimensions or something)
