Our favorite trailers from Comic-Con 2017
Comic-Con International 2017 is almost over in San Diego, and a flurry of new geek-related trailers for movies, TV shows and video games have all come out. There was a ton of new footage (some new trailers, other leaked footage, etc.), but we here at Mom & Dad Are Geeks are just focusing on the ones that we enjoyed watching over the weekend:
Ready Player One
This was the first time we have seen some footage from the Steven Spielberg-directed movie, based on the totally awesome book by Ernest Cline. I think this first trailer shows some of the cool effects of the Oasis virtual world described in the book, but misses on the central theme/plot, which is about the main character’s search for the treasure/adventure. Hopefully future trailers will hit on that, rather than just another Transformers-like video game action movie.
Stranger Things, Season 2
At least one of us here on the M&DAG staff (me) loved Season 1 of Stranger Things, and we keep trying to get the other staff member to watch it (she’s stubborn). The addition of the Dragon’s Lair video game, arcade and Vincent Price narrative from Thriller make this so awesome. Can’t wait for October!
We’ve seen a few trailers for this already, but this one includes some more footage of the interaction between Thor and Hulk. The Thor movies need to be a lot funnier, so we’re encouraged by this rather than the dark-and-dismal movies from the first two outings. Plus, Jeff Goldblum being Jeff Goldblum.
With the success of this summer’s Wonder Woman movie, it makes sense to have Gal Gadot’s Amazonian princess be a major part of this trailer, if only to try to get people to forget the previous Batman v. Superman movie and focus on the other characters. We’re also warming up to Ezra Miller’s Flash. Still cautious on this, but this trailer is a good sign.
Lego Ninjago: The Movie
Following the success of The LEGO Movie and LEGO Batman movies, we get another brick-based animated feature. The Ninjago brand has already had a good run as a TV show, but this time they’re hitting the big screen (with different voice actors, but we’re OK with that since one of them is Jackie Chan). Plus, we love saying “La-Loyd” all the time now.
Star Trek: Discovery
We’ve had some doubts about this streaming TV show offering (coming in September to CBS All Access) since it was supposed to debut this January and now has been pushed back. But the trailer looks pretty cool. Not sure if we want to spend the money to see it, though.
Marvel’s The Defenders
The four Marvel-based series on Netflix (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) have done relatively well for the streaming service (mixed reviews at best for some of the later series), but things look pretty good here when you team them up all together to fight Sigourney Weaver.
The Flash Season 4
We fell behind on watching the TV version of the Flash (we kept getting annoyed that Barry kept telling everyone that he was the Flash), but this trailer might turn it around for us.
Arrow Comic-Con footage
Likewise, we have been amiss in watching our Arrow, so we can’t comment much on this trailer other than it’s cool to see Deathstroke back.
X-Men: The Gifted
This will be a TV show on Fox, and looks to be a strong entrant similar to LEGION, set in the world of mutants (just not in the Marvel TV universe or the film universe). It’s getting hard keeping track of all the different combined universes between the TV shows and movies. But yeah, this includes Blink, so we’re in!
Marvel’s The Inumans
This show is in the Marvel TV universe (the same one as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), featuring mutant-like heroes/villains (just don’t call them mutants or the lawyers might come after you). It’s interesting to see a version of Black Bolt here – this one will be for deep comics fans.
We’re not fans of The Walking Dead, but if you want to watch their Season 8 trailer, here’s the link.
