Our favorite trailers from Comic-Con 2017

Comic-Con International 2017 is almost over in San Diego, and a flurry of new geek-related trailers for movies, TV shows and video games have all come out. There was a ton of new footage (some new trailers, other leaked footage, etc.), but we here at Mom & Dad Are Geeks are just focusing on the ones that we enjoyed watching over the weekend:

Ready Player One
This was the first time we have seen some footage from the Steven Spielberg-directed movie, based on the totally awesome book by Ernest Cline. I think this first trailer shows some of the cool effects of the Oasis virtual world described in the book, but misses on the central theme/plot, which is about the main character’s search for the treasure/adventure. Hopefully future trailers will hit on that, rather than just another Transformers-like video game action movie.

Stranger Things, Season 2
At least one of us here on the M&DAG staff (me) loved Season 1 of Stranger Things, and we keep trying to get the other staff member to watch it (she’s stubborn). The addition of the Dragon’s Lair video game, arcade and Vincent Price narrative from Thriller make this so awesome. Can’t wait for October!

Comic-Con: All The Movie News You Need To Know (and Trailers You Need to See)

Minute-per-minute, no other week yields more news of the geeky persuasion than that of San Diego Comic-Con. Here’s a round-up of the movie news you need to know, then the trailers you need to see.

Oscar-winner Brie Larson officially announced as Captain Marvel
Due out 2018, it’s the first Marvel female superhero in forever. Black Widow fans ticked.

Joss Whedon still wants to direct a Black Window movie
“But should he?” asks io9. No. No, he should not. Black Widow fans ticked even more.

Kurt Russell will play StarLord’s Dad in Guardians 2
1. Didn’t we already know this? 2. Apparently Stallone is in this, too. Say what? 3. Most important: What’s on the soundtrack?

Guardians is also becoming a ride at Disneyland

ORIGINAL POST:
Here at Mom and Dad are Geeks, we’re not above celebrating a fake holiday, especially one created by Amazon.com as a way to get you to buy more stuff.

Yes, tomorrow (July 12, 2016) is Prime Day, Amazon’s yearly “shopping event” that wants you to go online for special deals that the online retailer has set up. More importantly, it’s a way to get people to sign up for Amazon Prime, its membership that offers members free shipping as well as access to its streaming media and music services.

On the off chance that you don’t already have an Amazon Prime membership, getting one on Prime Day is a great incentive – you get to participate in the Prime Day sales, and then are ready for the shipping frenzy that occurs later in the year during the holiday shopping season.

One way you can help us, the humble creators of this site, is to sign up via this site. Just click on the banner below, which will give us a small “finders fee” if you sign up for a Prime account (this link gives you a free 30-day trial). Go ahead, we’ll wait for you.

If you already have Prime, clicking on the banner below will give you some great deals on Prime Day:

E3 trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens shows us more Rey, Kylo and Chewie

Call us insane, but we can’t get enough of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we were very happy to see the latest E3 trailer from the makers of the upcoming LEGO Star Wars version of Episode VII.

This trailer gives us some more Rey moments (hooray!), as well as scenes with the pouty Kylo Ren (how will LEGO address his tantrums?) and a cool sequence featuring our favorite Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron.

This LEGO Ghostbusters animation is a must-see

Apologies for yet another Ghostbusters post (gee, you’d think there was another movie coming up). With the proliferation of LEGO mini-figures based on pop-culture brands, there are a LOT of stop-motion animations that people create on YouTube that are super-fantastic.

Here’s another one – the folks at Digital Wizardz created an homage to the original Ghostbusters film with stop-motion figures (not the CGI stuff that the regular LEGO teams do). The coolest part is the final battle, in which our heroes get help from a lot of different sources (it’s like they were playing LEGO Dimensions or something)

LEGO Dimensions expansion trailer hits the web ahead of E3

OK, finally we get some good news in the toys-to-life video game market. The team that makes the LEGO Dimensions video game (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group) announced new expansion packs that bring in even more pop-culture entertainment brands to the mix.

Beginning on Sept. 27, 2016, you’ll be able to get the Ghostbusters Story Pack (the one with characters from the upcoming movie), Adventure Time and Mission:Impossible Level Packs, Harry Potter and Adventure Time Team Packs, and The A-Team Fun Pack (LEGO Mr. T!). The level of expansion is mind-boggling – we’ll also see packs featuring characters from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The LEGO Batman Movie, The Goonies, Sonic The Hedgehog, Teen Titans Go!, LEGO City Undercover, Knight Rider, The Powerpuff Girls, Gremlins, Beetlejuice and even E.T. (not Entertainment Tonight – although a John Tesh and Mary Hart LEGO figure would be interesting).

Another new feature will be the Battle Arenas, which will provide split-screen local gameplay for up to four players. The minifigures included in the wave 6 through 9 expansion packs will also include “golden Toy Tags that unlock a Battle Arena within the Free Play Adventure World of the corresponding entertainment brand.” Don’t worry, we’ll figure it all out.

Here’s the trailer for the expansion. Feel free to squee with delight:

LEGO Club Magazine: A Cool Free Perk

LEGO Club Magazine

If you — or your kids — are LEGO fans, LEGO Club magazine is a free perk you should be taking advantage of.

At left is the May/June issue, which arrived in our mailbox this week. There are puzzles, comics, quizzes, a poster, and giveaways, all geared toward the 5- to 9-year-old fan, and usually themed around the latest set releases. And, best of all, it’s free.

Will it inspire the kids bug you to buy new LEGO sets? Yes. But they always do, anyway, and this way they get some cool mail, just for them, several times a year.
